Here’s what you need to know today about the current state of America.
Minneapolis is under siege
The mainstream media is under-reporting what is happening in Minneapolis. On social media, residents are desperately posting about the all-out attacks by ICE and other federal agents, as a result of what ICE is calling Operation Metro Surge.
ICE agents are now grabbing people–violently–and taking them into detention, and only THEN determining their legal status. This is illegal.
They are picking up people, including protestors, and then telling them they will give them immunity from prosecution if they give the names of other protestors or undocumented immigrants.
They are attacking (again violently) people who are just filming and taking them into detention. You have a constitutional right to film. There is nothing illegal about filming. For example, a US citizen who was filming had her hands broken by ICE and was held without treatment for hours before being released. Her wife is still in custody.
What can you do?
1. You can find a list of companies that support ICE here. (Note that Avelo is no longer on the list as we won and stopped them.)
Write/email these company and tell them you intend to boycott them. If you can only pick two, choose Hilton and Enterprise, who both provide services to ICE regularly. (See this article re: Hilton. )
2. Contact your representatives and Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer and urge them to refuse to fund DHS in this month’s budget unless legislation is passed:
- Prohibiting masks
- Requiring body cameras be on
- And eliminating qualified immunity protections
Bills have already been introduced for all three. Qualified immunity is critical because that allows individual agents to be criminally pursued for their actions. Without it, they have absolute impunity. Eliminating qualified immunity is the most effective way to get them to show more restraint.
If you are willing, tell your representatives and leadership to shut the government down this month unless these restrictions are passed. The current budget calls for a massive funding increase for CBP and DHS–while US citizens are being attacked and killed by them. This is unacceptable and the budget is the one piece of leverage we have.
